The Donkodo Family Resident Association has come to the aid of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital in the Central Region by renovating and handing over some wards in the hospital.
The Cape Coast District Hospital, formerly known as the Central Regional Hospital, fell into disrepair after the construction of the Interbeton Hospital, which is now the Central Regional Hospital.
The new facility’s establishment led to the neglect of the former Metropolitan Hospital, resulting in its current deplorable condition.
The Donkodo Family consists of individuals who are native to Cape Coast, as well as others who attended schools in the region.
The leadership of the group, through donations, renovated the children and female ward of the facility. The male ward was no exception with further plans to also renovate the emergency ward of the hospital.
According to the General Secretary of the group, Kweku Bernard, they decided to support the facility purely on humanitarian grounds adding that members of the group never hesitated when the issue of the hospital was put before them.
“We decided to come together as a family and help our region. We felt that the health needs of the people of Cape Coast were important and so we discussed it as a group. We initially began with the toilet facility of the hospital and later moved to the female and children’s ward. We renovated the male ward with plans of completing the emergency ward soon. We didn’t just embark on renovation but also supported the facility with, ten beds, wheelchairs and other medical accessories.
“We are planning that by December we should be able to finish the emergency ward of the facility to serve the health needs of the people of the region. As part of the Fetu Afahye celebration most of our members are in town to celebrate and we felt that we must do this gesture,” he stated.
The general secretary noted that cleaners will be employed and paid by the group to see to it that the facility is kept clean, particularly the toilet. He also urged management of the facility to keep an eye on the facility.
“We will be visiting more often to see how well they keep the facility clean because that is the only way the facility can be maintained,” he added.
The nurse Manager of the facility, Caroline Agbodza, was grateful for the gesture with the assurance of maintaining the blocks that have been renovated.
“This facility used to be the Central Regional Hospital but after the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital was built in 1997, the attention was turned to that facility neglecting once vibrant Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital the Donkodo family have come to our rescue renovating some of our blocks and we hope others will follow in their footsteps.
“We are in need of a lot of things such as a washing machine, and an X-ray machine, among others. The wards are few so we put the medical and surgical cases together which need to be separated. The Patronage has declined compared to previous years and this makes it difficult to get Internally Generated Funds to support our operations “the Nurse Manager said.
