Election 2024: David Apasera rejects PNC’s 2024 Congress results

Defeated flagbearer hopeful of the People’s National Convention (PNC), David Apasera has rejected the results from the 2024 PNC National Congress, held to elect its national executives ahead of the December 7 general elections.

The congress, which took place on September 7, encountered several delays due to an injunction filed by Apasera’s camp.

Despite the delays, Bernard Mornah was declared by officials from the Electoral Commission as the flagbearer.  Mornah secured a commanding 1,138 votes of the total votes cast.

At a press conference in Accra on Sunday, David Apasera accused the Electoral Commission of conducting a fraudulent and biased election, disregarding an earlier injunction from the Accra High Court.

According to Mr Apasara, Bernard Mornah and the Electoral Commission conspired to undermine his candidacy and hinted at legal action to challenge the election results.

“For all intents and purposes, yesterday’s purported election was fraudulent, lopsided and can never be free and fair. I am aware that Article 55 (4) of the 1992 constitution requires political parties to have a national calendar. This means that a political party cannot conduct elections and have the EC declare the said election when other regions had not participated at all in such an election.”

“Yes, Western region didn’t vote at all, Western region didn’t vote at all they had gone home, Northern region didn’t vote at all, they had gone home, and I understand several too they didn’t vote. Now it is a very sad thing that we will have this nature, the EC will do what they have done,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has been elected the National Chairman of the PNC. He defeated Hajia Hajara in the party’s national delegates congress held across all 16 regions.

Mr Awingobit polled 893 votes, while Hajia Hajara garnered 460 votes out of 1,382 votes cast, 1,353 were valid, with 29 rejected.
