The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disclosed that it will continue to engage its Members of Parliament who have declared their decisions to run as independent candidates.
General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, in an interview on Citi FM, said the party has no choice than to continue engaging the aggrieved MPs considering the fact that the party does not have a majority in Parliament
Kodua Frimpong said the NPP learnt its lesson from 2020, where candidates were more or less imposed on constituents and so it decided to open up for every member who desired to contest to do so and so it came as a surprise that those announcing to go independent raised issues after the party’s primaries.
“You will recall that in 2020, one of the strings that the party’s executives were chastised about was that in most cases, the constituents were opting for primaries but yet there were more of impositions on them and that is what culminated in us losing some seats and that is why, under the leadership of Stephen Ayensu Ntim, we said we were going to open up for every party person who desired to contest to do so.
“But the unfortunate aspect is that our brothers and sisters who opted to go independent went through the elections and no issues were raised and so we are finding it difficult to understand but as party, we still believe that we should still continue to engage those who have decided to go independent until the Electoral Commission comes out with a notice of poll and so let us not lose hope.”
“Circumstances are not the same unless you don’t want to face reality. Common sense also tells you that when a situation presents itself, you need to have innovative ways of addressing it,” the NPP’s General Secretary further told Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News.
Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison and Kwadwo Asante of Suhum have all disclosed they will contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as independent candidates.
