Residents of Labun Quarters and Kudjokrom in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region have been saved from consuming contaminated water thanks to a solar-powered water system provided by the NGO, Faith in Humanity.
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 seeks to ensure universal access to safe and affordable drinking water by 2030. However, with only six years remaining, many communities still lack access to clean water. In Ghana, an estimated 8% of the population continues to rely on unsafe water sources.
Prior to this intervention, the inhabitants of Labun Quarters and Kudjokrom had no choice but to share water collected from beneath a bridge with animals. Recognising the dire need, Faith In Humanity stepped in to provide a solar-powered water system to address the issue.
Speaking at the facility’s handover, Rev Isaac Antwi, the Country Coordinator for Faith in Humanity, explained the motivation behind their decision: “We chose Labun Quarters and Kudjokrom because some of our members live in these communities, and they frequently shared the challenges of accessing clean water. During the dry season, the stream dries up, and in the rainy season, they are forced to share water with animals. With the support of Faith in Humanity, Switzerland, we were able to construct this facility.”
Expressing her gratitude, Patience Nabija, a resident of Labun Quarters, said, “This used to be our water source, where we fetched water for our daily needs. Thanks to the new water system provided by Faith in Humanity, we no longer have to rely on it. We are deeply grateful for their generosity, which has transformed our access to clean water.”
Another resident, Nnanabi Kandi, added, “We are thankful for this new water system. Our water crisis has finally ended, and we now have access to clean water and renewed hope, all thanks to the kindness of generous donors.”
