Residents of Onwe in the Ejisu constituency, Ashanti Region, are taking steps to improve their literacy and basic skills.
An initiative focusing on promoting adult literacy and lifelong learning has been a lifeline for many in the community, especially older residents who did not have the opportunity to pursue formal education in their youth.
The Engage Now Africa programme offers training in essential literacy skills such as reading, writing, and basic numeracy, as well as digital literacy to enable participants to navigate the demands of modern society.
Speaking at an event organised by Engage Now Africa last Tuesday September 3, the African Director, Cecilia Amankwaa, emphasised the importance of literacy as a tool for empowerment.
“Literacy is a fundamental right for everyone, regardless of age or background. Through this programme, we have been able to introduce soft skills such as baking, cooking, frying, bead making, and leather works,” she stated.
Kofi Asante shared her excitement about the opportunity to learn. “I was only a farmer, but now I am so grateful for this programme. I now produce shower gel, shampoo, and hair conditioner.”
Marian Esiapeh, the Area Welfare Self-reliance Manager for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint, also emphasised the need for such initiatives to empower women.
“All like-minded organizations who want to see women thrive should come on board and help women in Ghana read and write. This is the only way to ensure children are educated. Only through this can they have their voices heard,” she stated.
