Ketu South: Several homes destroyed by tidal waves

About 15 households in Salakope, Amutinu, and adjoining communities in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region are currently taking shelter in churches after their homes were devastated by tidal waves.

The annual occurrence of high tides along the Eastern coast of the country did not spare houses and livelihoods.

Speaking to Citi News, the Assembly Member for the area, Sylvester Kumawu noted that until a sea defense is constructed, the coast in the Volta region will continue to suffer from the impact.

“The tidal wave has festered again and then it has come to destroy as usual, homes that are located along the beaches and taken away properties of the people.

“It has completely submerged items like farm animals, boats that they [the people] use for fishing and their fishing nets. They have lost them. Those who have been displaced by the tidal wave are putting up in churches and then some are touching base with friends and family elsewhere.”

The government initiated feasibility studies into coastal erosion two years ago, but these have not materialized. The Assembly Member called for immediate intervention to sustain livelihoods.
