The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has touted two of its distinguished scientists who have been invited to represent Ghana at the 2024 United Nations General Assembly Science Summit, scheduled to take place in New York on September 19, 2024.
The summit will provide a platform for discussing science and innovation aimed at addressing key global challenges. Professor Alexander Yaw Debrah, Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at KNUST, and Dr. Linda Batsa Debrah, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at KNUST, will each contribute to the event.
Professor Debrah will present on “How North-South Research Collaboration Contributes to Achieving SDG 3: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All Ages.” His presentation will focus on enhancing the identification and management of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Ghana, including elephantiasis and hydrocele, through innovative mobile reporting systems utilized by Community Health Volunteers (CHVs). He will also highlight how digital solutions have improved the reporting accuracy of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), advancing the World Health Organization’s NTDs Agenda 2030 and SDG 3: Health for All.
Dr. Batsa Debrah will moderate Session B titled “The Future of Researcher’s Global Health Career in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities.” Her discussion will address the challenges faced by early-career researchers in resource-limited settings within low and middle-income countries. She will explore obstacles related to funding, infrastructure, and skill acquisition, and propose strategies to overcome these challenges to foster scientific innovation across Africa.
The Science Summit is a premier global event that brings together leading scientists, policymakers, and innovators to tackle pressing scientific and technological issues. This year, the Summit will address a range of topics, including climate action, One Health, artificial intelligence, biodiversity, and clean energy. A special emphasis will be placed on the Africa Science Leadership Coalition, which aims to promote African leadership in science policy decision-making.
