The Northern Region recently celebrated a dynamic two-day event as part of the Road to Ghana Digital and Innovation Week (GDIW) 2024, held in Tamale.

Hosted by HOPin Academy, which organised last year’s inaugural event in the region, this year’s gathering was marked by enthusiasm, energy, and a collective vision for a more digitally empowered future.

The event commenced on September 2, 2024, with HERdigital, a special session dedicated to empowering young women in the Northern Region.

This hands-on workshop provided participants with practical skills in creating and managing business profiles, leveraging online marketing, and exploring e-commerce platforms.

For many attendees, HERdigital proved transformative, enhancing their confidence and equipping them with essential tools for thriving in the digital age.

The session underscored the importance of including women in tech, yielding inspiring results.

The following day, September 3, 2024, continued with the theme “Innovate Together: Collaborating for Digital Transformation and Impact.”

The day opened with a Welcome Address from HOPin Academy’s Executive Director, Mr McCarthy Mac-Gbathy who emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to develop digital solutions that make a meaningful impact in the region.

Alhaji Rufai Mohammed, the Tamale Metro Coordinating Director, in his keynote speech, highlighted the role of digital transformation in regional development and underscored the importance of collective action to achieve meaningful progress.

A highlight of the event was the Panel Discussion on “Digital Transformation in the Northern Region – Co-designing Digital Services for and with Women to Meet Their Specific Needs.”

This discussion featured experts and local leaders who explored how digital services can be customised to better serve women.

The panel emphasised that involving women in the design process was crucial to creating solutions that are both accessible and effective.

Participants also engaged in breakout sessions covering topics such as digital literacy, financial inclusion, and using technology to grow businesses.

These sessions offered practical advice and actionable strategies that attendees could implement in their communities.

The MSMEs Exhibition was a bustling hub of activity, where local businesses showcased their innovations and demonstrated how digital tools have enhanced their operations.

The exhibition provided a valuable platform for entrepreneurs to connect with potential partners, investors, and customers, paving the way for future opportunities.

The event was chaired by Lamashegu Nnaa, a highly esteemed traditional ruler in the Northern Region. His presence highlighted the integration of cultural leadership with modern technological advancements.

Representative of the Tamale Metropolitan Mayor, Mr Emmanuel Mumuni, Programme Component Manager at GIZ Ghana emphasised the critical role of digital transformation in improving small business prospects.

He stressed that ongoing collaboration between the government, the private sector, and development partners was essential for successful digital initiatives, particularly in the Northern Region.

This event is part of a series of regional build-up activities leading to the national GDIW event in Accra.

These regional gatherings, like the one in Tamale, focus on empowering local communities, showcasing innovations, and addressing region-specific challenges through digital solutions.

Insights and collaborations from these events will be further developed and featured at the national GDIW, where stakeholders from across Ghana will continue to advance the country’s digital transformation.

As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of excitement and commitment to making the Northern Region a leader in digital transformation.

The discussions, connections, and ideas generated over the two days have set the stage for a future where technology drives meaningful change for all.
