Poultry farmers in the Northern region are decrying a shortage of feed for their farms, a situation worsened by the ongoing dry spell in the area.

The drought has significantly reduced grain production, leading to a scarcity of key ingredients such as maize and soya beans, which are essential in the production of poultry feed.

In an interview with Citi News, Mark Kwaku Abobra, Vice Chairman of the Northern Regional Poultry Farmers Association, highlighted that the shortage has led to a surge in grain prices, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the farmers.

“The drought has really affected us severely. The feed that we use…now the prices have increased. Maize for instance, we used to buy at GH¢400 here in Tamale but a bag is currently selling at GH¢800.

“Soya bean, the prices have increased. A lot of people are stopping the business because of the high cost of the ingredients and it has forced a lot of people out of business. But we those that we are in, we are just inadequately feeding our birds not to go out of business.”
