Residents of Agona East District lament decades-long struggle without electricity

Residents of Kofi Abam, Okotokwa, Kwame Ntiful, and five other communities in the Agona East District have been grappling with the lack of electricity for decades, severely impacting their daily lives and economic activities.

For school children, the situation is particularly dire as they struggle to study at night without proper lighting. The absence of electricity is not only stalling economic growth but also threatening the safety of thousands who are forced to live in darkness.

Candles and lanterns have become the primary sources of light for residents of these eight communities. The lack of power has significantly hindered businesses that rely on electricity, further exacerbating economic challenges.

Residents express their frustration, noting that the lack of electricity has left them vulnerable to criminal activities. Some communities have been wired but remain unconnected to the national grid, while neighbouring areas enjoy electricity, highlighting a stark disparity.

Assembly members who spoke to Channel One News described the situation as worrying, citing unfulfilled government promises.

Member of Parliament for Agona East, Queenstar Mame Pokuah Sawyerr, accused the current government of sabotaging her efforts to connect these communities to the national grid.

She noted that despite her initiatives, which have successfully connected 48 communities, her appeals to the Ministry of Energy have not yielded results.
