Fisherfolk in Kojokrom in the Essikado-Ketan constituency in the Western Region, have appealed for a revision of the fishing close season, citing its negative impact on their livelihood.
During an appearance on Channel One TV’s Community Forum in the Western Region, a fisherfolk representative, Kofi expressed concerns about the June-July close season, which they claim has not been effective in promoting the recovery of fish stocks.
Kofi noted that the premix fuel, which is essential for their operations, has also become a challenge.
They lamented that the fuel is not being consistently supplied, and when it is, there is no notice given to them, causing inconvenience.
Another fisherman, Kakra explained to Channel One News that the timing of the close season announcement is problematic, as it coincides with the peak fishing season.
“They announced the close season just when we believe the fish are starting to appear at the sea’s surface,” he said, adding “So, when the season ends, there’s no guarantee we’ll catch any fish. We go out to sea and often return with nothing. Our leaders have attended several meetings, but nothing has changed, which is a concern for us.”
The fisherfolk are seeking a more effective and sustainable approach to managing the fishing industry, saying, “We’re not opposed to closing the sea, but the timing is an issue. The June and July period is not working for us at all.”
