In a bid to crack down on water-related offences, the Mampong Magistrate Court has sentenced 23-year-old Sumaila Abdul Rahman to 12 months in prison for stealing water meters.

This verdict is part of a wider effort to combat illegal activities that threaten the integrity of the water supply system in the region.

On Friday, October 11, 2024, Rahman, who is of mixed Ghanaian and Nigerian descent and resides in Mampong, was arrested for his involvement in the theft of water meters.

He was swiftly brought before the Mampong Magistrate Court on Monday, October 14, 2024, where Chief Inspector Richard Obeng Asare led the prosecution. The court found Rahman guilty, and he was sentenced to a year in prison the same day.

In a related case, Priscilla Amofa is being held at the Kumasi Central Police Station for illegally reconnecting her water supply without settling her outstanding bills. Her accomplice, Nana Adu, accused of similar illegal reconnections, remains on the run. These incidents have raised concerns about the security of the water supply system in the area.

The arrests and sentencing underscore the authorities’ commitment to tackling water theft and illegal reconnections, both of which hinder the efforts to provide reliable water services to local communities.

Management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Ashanti Region, including Ashanti North and South, is calling on residents to report any suspicious activities related to water theft, illegal connections, or unauthorized reconnections. This is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of essential water services in the region.

These recent developments serve as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to utility regulations and the legal consequences of engaging in illegal activities.

The swift judicial action in these cases has been commended for promoting accountability and protecting community resources.

Management encourages all residents to remain informed and to cooperate with local authorities to foster a law-abiding and responsible community.

“We are dedicated to providing safe and potable water to communities,” management stated, “and we urge the public to assist us in ensuring better service by reporting any illegal activities related to the water supply.”
