Proponents of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-Gay Bill, have taken a bold step by petitioning the Attorney General to address the prolonged delays in the case.
They are urging the Attorney General to expedite the filing of necessary documentation, which, according to the Chief Justice, is a significant contributor to the current delay in hearings.
The group expressed concerns that these delays undermine the Supreme Court’s intention to proceed with an “early trial.”
To drive their point home, they organized a walk to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, October 8, demanding swift adjudication of the case.
This bill has been a subject of controversy, with proponents arguing it’s essential to protect traditional family values, while opponents claim it infringes on human rights.
The bill was passed by the Parliament of Ghana on February 28, 2024, but its fate hangs in the balance as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo awaits the outcome of two Supreme Court cases challenging its constitutionality
“At this point, proponents of the Pro-Family Values bill together with the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, Advocates for Christ Ghana, The Presbyterian Church of Ghana, The Methodist Church of Ghana, The Catholic Church, The Assemblies of God Church, The Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Perez Chapel International, Royal House Chapel International, Traditional Rulers and Traditionalists, the Muslim Ummah in Ghana, and all other Christian ecumenical bodies and groups across the nation, petition you to act in accordance with your constitutional mandate and to:
“Take urgent steps to complete filing the documentation if any relating to the case you have made so that you are not guilty in the eyes of citizens of delaying court processes, which was the very complaint the Chief Justice made last week.”
The protest aims to push for the president’s immediate assent to the bill, which has been awaiting action since Parliament passed it on February 28.
The bill’s progress has been stalled due to a Supreme Court ruling on July 17, which delayed judgments on anti-gay cases until all related legal issues are resolved.
