Anti-LGBTQ+ bill: Stop abusing your power – Sam George tells Chief Justice

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has accused the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, of delaying the hearing of the anti-LGBTQ+ case before the Supreme Court.

According to Sam George, the Chief Justice is being selective in the delivery of Justice.

Speaking to journalists after presenting a petition to the Attorney-General and the Chief Justice following a march in Accra on Tuesday, October 8, Sam George, who is the lead proponent of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, said the long delay in the assent of the bill is not the best.

“We are demanding that the Chief Justice stops being selective in the dispensation of justice. We are demanding that the Chief Justice stop abusing her office and her power. She is using her power capriciously and maliciously and that has been warned and prevented in Article 296 of the Constitution.

“The Supreme Court made reference to having and I quote, ‘an early trial’ assuring us that it will work expeditiously to hear and rule on these matters in a timely manner.

“Unfortunately, over 10 weeks later, there is no indication of any schedule or actions to execute an early trial that will protect our rights as citizens to timely and efficient justice delivery in this instance.”

Sam George led a march on Tuesday in Accra to protest against what he said were delays in the adjudication of anti-LGBTQ+ cases.
