Commend Catholic Church for taking stand against galamsey – Mornah

Disqualified Presidential Candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has praised the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra for taking a bold stand against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

On Friday, October 11, Catholic worshippers, led by the Archdiocese, took to the streets of Accra in a protest walk aimed at raising awareness about the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment, particularly its water bodies.

The protest began with a service at the Holy Spirit Cathedral and was supported by various groups, including the “Crusaders Against Galamsey.”

Mornah, who participated in the protest, lauded the Catholic Church for mobilizing its members and called the action a necessary step in the fight to protect Ghana’s natural resources.

Mornah also expressed his disappointment over Organised Labour’s decision to call off its planned strike, which was meant to pressure the government to take stronger action against galamsey.

He suggested that continuing the strike would have intensified the push for more decisive measures to address the environmental crisis.

The protest comes amid growing concerns over the long-term damage caused by illegal mining to rivers, farmlands, and communities across the country.

“This is the way, and the Catholic Church I must commend, they have taken a stand at a time when labour unions have shown so much disorganization.”
