Conduct of anti-gay protesters likely to subvert judiciary process – Association of Judges and Magistrates

The Association of Judges and Magistrates have described the protest by proponents of the anti-LGBTQ+ as an attempt to subvert the judicial process.

Proponents of the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill led by Sam George, marched to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, October 8, to demand a timely resolution of the cases challenging the legality of the bill and processes in approving same.

But the Association of Judges and Magistrates noted that the exercise was in bad faith considering the judicial service had explained that the delay emanates from the actions of the parties in the case.

At a press conference on Thursday, October 10, the President of the association, Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, urged users of the court to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement.

“When people who are supposed to know better seek to stampede the judiciary and attack the judiciary to cause mayhem, that is a threat to the judiciary and all that it stands for.

“How could people who should know better that his case is not ripe for hearing get up and shout from the rooftop and ask for judgment to be given in his case? How can a court give judgment in a case in which the parties have not finished filing the requisite processes? Such conduct subverts the judiciary process and ought to be condemned by all Ghanaians to protect judges and staff of the judiciary service.”

“Such behaviours subvert the judiciary process and undermine the administration of justice, and we call on all persons be they litigants, parties or lawyers who have cases in court, not to do anything to undermine the administration of justice that has the tendency to disrupt the peace of the country,” Justice Kwofie further told the media.
