The Development Action Association (DAA), with support from the program “Sustainable Employment through Agribusiness (AgriBiz) in Ghana” (commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ) commemorated International Day of Rural Women on Tuesday, 15th October 2024, at Kasoa Nyanyano.
Women account for a significant portion of the agricultural workforce in rural Ghana, contributing to food production, processing, and distribution.
However, many rural women face challenges such as limited access to improved agricultural technologies and resources, affecting productivity and sustainability.
This event will emphasize these issues and encourage dialogue on solutions.
This year’s event, themed “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All”, will spotlight the crucial role that rural women play in agriculture and food systems. The event will provide a platform for rural women to exchange knowledge, best practices, and engage with policymakers, stakeholders, and agricultural organizations.
Its goal is to foster collaboration on sustainable agricultural technology, alleviate manual labor, and enhance food production in Ghana.
The International Day of Rural Women (IDRW) is celebrated annually to recognize the essential contributions of rural women in agriculture, food security, and rural development. It highlights the vital role they play in food production, from farming to processing and distribution, while also addressing the unique challenges they face, such as limited access to resources and technology.
In Ghana, IDRW is especially significant as rural women form the backbone of the country’s agricultural sector, contributing to food security and economic growth. The day serves as a platform to advocate for their empowerment, better support systems, and policy changes to ensure their voices are heard and their work is recognized both nationally and globally.
This year’s celebration is in partnership with key stakeholders and organization including Gomoa East District Assembly, GIZ (Agribiz), UN Women, YARA, Food and Agriculture Organisation, Forestry Commission, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa and EGG.
The celebration is aimed to foster greater collaboration between rural women, government officials, and stakeholders, ensuring the adoption of technologies and policies that will support increased food production. Women farmers and fishers will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring food security for Ghana and beyond.
The Development Action Association (DAA), established in 1984, is a farmer-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering rural women and promoting sustainable development.
With members across 71 communities in the Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Volta, and Oti regions of Ghana.
About 98% of the association’s beneficiaries are rural women involved in agriculture, fisheries, and small-scale animal farming, with DAA providing training, access to improved technologies, and resources to boost food security, productivity, and livelihoods.
By fostering self-reliance, grassroots participation, and equitable economic development, DAA ensures that rural women play a critical role in Ghana’s agricultural sector and socio-economic progress.
DAA is a member of Farmers Organisations Network in Ghana (FONG) and the Network of Farmers Fishers Organizations and Agricultural Producers in West Africa (ROPPA).
The program “Sustainable Employment through Agribusiness (AgriBiz) in Ghana” was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI).
Running from April 2021 until December 2025, the program focuses on strengthening micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the agribusiness sector to promote productive employment.
