The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to disconnect what it describes as unauthorized electricity connections and remove fake meters from customers as part of a system audit aimed at reducing commercial losses.
In a statement, ECG indicated that supply to affected customers will be restored once they apply for new service at their respective district offices. The company urged customers to apply for service only through official channels and avoid using middlemen.
Recently, ECG has faced intense criticism from stakeholders over its inability to recover revenue from power sales.
Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited, an independent power producer, recently announced the shutdown of its 560MW power plant due to ECG’s failure to meet overdue payment obligations totalling $259 million, excluding fuel costs.
