Galamsey: Organised Labour to embark on nationwide strike from October 10

Organised Labour has declared a nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024, following the government’s failure to address their demands concerning illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

In an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, October 10, organised labour expressed their frustration over the government’s inaction.

It had previously set a deadline (end of September) for the government to take decisive measures against illegal mining activities, which they argue are detrimental to the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the TUC, in a statement, noted that “Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of the government to meet our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect from October 10, 2024.”

He called on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, to pressure the government into taking immediate action to curb illegal mining activities.
