Prof Ransford Gyampo, President of the University of Ghana Branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG), has expressed scepticism over recent claims by Ghana Water Limited regarding improvements in the water supply situation for Cape Coast, Elmina, and nearby communities.
In an update to customers, the company highlighted the significant reduction in water turbidity at the Sekyere Hemang plant.
The water treatment facility had been battling high turbidity levels, previously averaging 14,000 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU).
However, through the efforts of the Central Regional Security Council (REGSEC), led by Justina Marigold Assan, Central Regional Minister, the company in the region says turbidity levels have decreased to an average of 9,000 NTU.
But Prof Gyampo in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday noted that “Unless an expert goes to check these and inform us, treat everything told to us by the politicians as propaganda.”
“All of a sudden, the water company that came out publicly to express concern about the way and manner we have destroyed our water bodies and how it is difficult to purify drinking water for us to drink, all of a sudden they are saying just because Labour is saying that water bodies are being destroyed and so we want to go on strike, suddenly they say that everything is improving.”
He criticised the timing of the announcement, suggesting it was politically motivated in response to Organised Labour’s recent declaration of an indefinite strike over the destruction of water bodies due to illegal mining activities.
“I am saying that it doesn’t lie in the mouth of the Central Regional Minister to come tell us these things. Let experts go and investigate. So, for me, I dismiss those findings or the contents of that statement with contempt,” he added.
