The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has given indication that it will not take part in the intended strike action by Organised Labour in protest against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
This, according to the group, is because of the essential nature of transport services.
In a press statement, the group acknowledged the damaging effects of galamsey on the environment and the country’s socioeconomic development but emphasised that withdrawing transport services was not the best approach to addressing the issue.
“While we agree with the issues raised by the citizenry on galamsey, we believe that withdrawing our service, which is classified as an essential service, will not be the best way to address the issue at hand.
“Therefore, we are by this Press Statement urging our members and affiliates not to take part in the impending strike actions.
“We further urge members to continue to carry out their operations in a peaceful and lawful manner, ensuring that commuters have access to transport services,” part of the statement read.
The group reiterated its support for calls on the government to find a lasting solution to the galamsey crisis and expressed its willingness to engage with leadership on the matter, stating that “We fully support the request made to the Government to tackle the issue of galamsey and the call for a lasting solution to the matter. We will therefore continue to engage with leadership on the issues and seek an amicable solution.”
