The Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey has commenced its three-day demonstration, with protesters gathering at Okponglo this morning.

When the Citi News team arrived at the venue around 8:40 am, demonstrators had already started arriving, signaling the beginning of the protest aimed at raising awareness about the destructive impact of illegal mining (galamsey) and demanding stronger action from the government.

Protesters will march from Okponglo through the Association International School to Kawukudi Junction and then to the Parliament House where a petition will be submitted to demand the release of the 53 persons arrested during the Democracy Hub’s demonstration on September 22.

The protest is organised under the slogans “#FreeTheCitizens” and “#SayNoToGalamsey.”

The demonstration aims to draw attention to the detrimental effects of illegal mining (galamsey) and advocate for stronger action against the practice.

Despite the police being there to provide security, some of the protesters with t-shirts with the inscription security were also nominated to help maintain order during the march.

Noble Amedowu, one of the lawyers representing the activists, gave an outline of the three-day event in an interview with Citi News.

“The demonstration will start from Okponglo through Association International to Kawukudi Junction to Parliament House, where we will present a petition to Parliament and also present another petition to the Land’s Commission and the AG.

“There will be another demonstration on the second day. On the third day, there will be a night vigil, where the group will display the devastating effect of galamsey on the environment, especially on the Pra, Ankobra and Birim Rivers.”
