The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has extended his congratulations to Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her historic election as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was selected as the new Commonwealth Secretary-General during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) held in Apia, Samoa, on Friday.

She will be succeeding Patricia Scotland, Baroness Scotland of the United Kingdom, marking her as the first African woman to hold this esteemed position.

Mahama’s congratulatory message recognized Botchwey’s achievement as a significant milestone for Ghana and Africa on the global stage. He praised her diplomatic skill and longstanding contributions to Ghana’s foreign relations, expressing confidence in her ability to unite and lead the 56-member state association in addressing common challenges and fostering international cooperation.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 29, Mr Mahama stated, “Congratulations Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on your election as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. You will be joining a special group of diplomats to help make the Commonwealth and the world a better place.

“I am particularly excited that after Patricia Scotland, we have another distinguished female at the head of the Commonwealth.”

As Secretary-General, Botchwey will be responsible for steering the Commonwealth’s agenda, advocating for shared goals, and advancing peace, democracy, and sustainable development across member states.

Her election brings new expectations for strengthened ties and greater collaboration among Commonwealth nations, with a particular focus on Africa’s developmental priorities.
