The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has temporarily suspended her campaign activities in the Bawku in the Upper East region following reports of renewed unrest and confusion in the area.

A statement from her campaign team on Friday indicated that the decision was made as a sign of respect for the affected communities and to avoid exacerbating any tensions during the NDC’s campaign.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who had been on a nationwide tour, was scheduled to visit Bawku as part of her campaign for the upcoming December 7 elections.

The ongoing situation in Bawku, a historically conflict-prone area in the Upper East Region, has recently seen a resurgence of clashes.

Security officials have increased their presence in the area to ensure the safety of residents. The renewed tensions have raised concerns ahead of the election period, as parties are expected to engage with constituents across all regions.

Prof. Naana Jane, known for her focus on education and peace, has emphasized her commitment to peaceful electoral processes. She urged residents to remain calm and continue to work with authorities to restore peace in the region.

Local authorities, traditional leaders, and community members are continuing their peace-building efforts, while the NDC has assured its supporters that it will resume campaign activities in Bawku when conditions stabilize.
