The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it feels vindicated in its claims that the Electoral Commission (EC) has shown incompetence in its duties, following the EC’s recent decision to terminate its contract with Yasarko Printing Press Limited.
Yasarko had initially been selected to print presidential and parliamentary ballot papers for the Oti and Western North regions in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The EC announced the cancellation after the NDC raised concerns about the company’s capacity and impartiality to manage such a critical electoral task.
The EC has since assured stakeholders that it is committed to providing oversight across all contracted firms to maintain the elections’ integrity.
Deputy National Organiser of the NDC, Elikem Kotoko, stated in an interview with Citi News that this cancellation reflects the EC’s lack of preparedness for the upcoming polls.
“We have been raising concerns and they would just rubbish it. And can they tell us now why exactly they have agreed and have gone ahead to cancel the contract? We have sent our agents to Yasarko for instance, running three shifts a day and this costs resources and no printing has been done, amongst other concerns we raised.
“And you have them [the EC] always want to defend without sitting down to professionally think through things. And if you have an umpire of a match that is yet to come or a match ongoing and is behaving in this way, it gives you every clear indication that not only are these square pegs in round holes, but they are not really fit for purpose and have a sinister motive, knowing also that the EC has made it very clear that they do not welcome fair criticisms.
“They do not think that people should contribute or make input to whatever actions they take. But they go and hit the wall, then they make a U-turn.”
