Non-profit organisation, PATH-Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana National Olympic Committee, Ghana Health Service, National Sports Authority, and other partners, marked National Fitness Day with a series of community activities in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region.
The event is part of the Community Sport and Health Cooperation Initiative, a global programme implemented in five countries, including Ghana. This initiative aims to foster collaboration between sports, health, and education sectors to promote physical activity, improve health, and reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
In Ghana, physical inactivity remains a significant concern. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 22% of adults and 81% of adolescents in the country are not physically active. Regular exercise is crucial in preventing NCDs, and just 30 minutes of activity daily can significantly boost physical and mental health.
National Fitness Day, first launched in August 2022, is observed every second Saturday of the month. It encourages Ghanaians to prioritise physical activity and raise awareness of its health benefits.
The event in Afigya Kwabre South showcased PATH’s efforts to integrate community sports into health initiatives, leveraging organised physical activities to align with WHO’s target of reducing physical inactivity by 15% globally.
PATH is a global non-profit organisation committed to achieving health equity through partnerships and innovative solutions. For over 40 years, PATH has tackled pressing health challenges worldwide by combining expertise in science, technology, and advocacy.
