Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, George Afriyie, has attributed the recent struggles of the Black Stars to the GFA rather than former coach Otto Addo.
In an interview on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Tuesday, Afriyie emphasised that the GFA must take responsibility for the team’s current woes.
“Of course, the GFA has to take a chunk of the blame because you see why I am saying this. In all these problems that they are talking about Otto Addo…Ghanaians, we have short memories, and I remember very well that when Otto was given the job to coach the Black Stars for the World Cup qualifiers, the last match against Nigeria, Otto Addo made it clear that he is only in for that short stay,” Afriyie stated.
He further explained that Otto Addo’s commitment was always intended to be temporary, aimed at helping Ghana qualify for the World Cup and enhancing his own coaching credentials.
“So, you see if you are bringing in a coach whose mentality, whose mind is already made up that I am coming to help Ghana qualify and better my CV at the World Cup and leave, then why did we give him the job?” Afriyie questioned.
Afriyie criticised the GFA’s decision-making process, highlighting the inconsistency in their approach.
“Fast forward, the man leaves you, you give the job to Chris Hughton and then Chris is sacked and then you go and beg him to come and take the job, so why are we blaming Otto Addo?” he added.
The former GFA Vice President’s remarks come amid growing discontent among fans and stakeholders regarding the performance of the Black Stars.
Afriyie’s comments suggest that the root of the problem lies within the GFA’s management and decision-making, rather than the individual coaches who have been at the helm.
