Franklin Cudjoe, the president of IMANI Africa, has expressed frustration and disbelief at the recent standoff in Parliament, describing the situation as annoying and shocking.
The IMANI Africa’s president’s criticism follows the confusion that erupted in Parliament after Speaker Alban Bagbin declared four seats vacant, a decision that has intensified a longstanding dispute between the two major caucuses over which side of the House should hold the majority.
In an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, November 9, Franklin Cudjoe shared his discontent with the situation, lamenting that crucial parliamentary business has been derailed by what he views as a petty and unnecessary dispute over seating arrangements.
He argued that the quarrel over seating positions is a trivial matter that does not constitute a serious constitutional issue. Instead, he sees it as a distraction from the fundamental responsibilities of lawmakers, who are expected to address policy matters and legislation that will impact the lives of citizens. He expressed disappointment that such a dispute could even occupy a central place in parliamentary discourse.
“Unless of course, they are telling me that the business left to be done is an unserious one. Well, then they continue playing this game.
“There are serious issues people are dealing with daily. And I think that Parliament should be the last place where this comedy of errors is being entertained.
“I frankly feel annoyed discussing this matter. This is a very trivial matter if you ask me, so trivial that I don’t think there is what they call a constitutional crime.”
