Kumasi Technical Institute bemoans overcrowding; calls for infrastructural support

The management of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) is lamenting the school’s infrastructure deficit as first-year students begin their three-year pre-tertiary academic journey.

According to management, the current facilities, including dormitories and classrooms, are insufficient to accommodate the number of students admitted, resulting in overcrowding.

In an interview with Citi News, the principal of the institution, Gabriel Kingsford Osei, emphasised the critical role of technical and vocational education in driving the growth and development of Ghana’s economy.

He appealed for support to alleviate the challenges faced by the school and to enhance the delivery of quality technical and vocational training for students.

Out of the 1,760 students expected to report, 1,426 have already reported. However, this number is already straining the school’s limited infrastructure.

During the school’s matriculation ceremony on Friday, November 22, the principal, detailed the challenges confronting the school.

“The infrastructure is a challenge to us in the sense that looking at our dormitory, the boys dormitory in particular, this year boys in boarding is 1136. But considering our infrastructure, we were supposed to take a maximum of 650 to back the other levels.

“But this year Level 1 alone is having 1136 male borders. Meaning it is a very big challenge to us. As we speak, not all of them have reported, but we have started experiencing the challenge. Where they will sleep is another issue. And so we will plead to all philanthropists to come to the aid of Kumasi Technical School in terms of infrastructure.”

He also made an appeal to female students, urging them to take greater interest in technical and vocational education.

He expressed concern about the low participation of females in these programmes, emphasising the promising prospects and opportunities available to women in this field.
