The Rebecca Foundation has teamed up with the Merck Foundation to support the education of 30 brilliant but needy girls in the Greater Accra Region.
The initiative involved the provision of cash and essential school kits to help keep the beneficiary students in class.
The donation which was made on behalf of the First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, leader of the Rebecca Foundation on Monday, November 11 is to support the beneficiaries in the pursuit of their dreams through education.
Items presented to the girls included essential school supplies—backpacks, textbooks, stationery, school uniforms, shoes, and sanitary pads.
Each student also received a cash stipend, aimed at reducing financial barriers and motivating them to focus on their studies.
A representative from the First Lady’s office, Sheila Sakyi-Oppong, indicated that
“It’s an initiative by the Merck Foundation in partnership with the Rebecca Foundation that is working to ensure that more adolescent girls stay in school for longer.”
“We know that once they go through the JHS level and the SHS level, they can continue from there to be anything they aspire to be,” she added.
The acting director of administration at the Ghana Education Service (GES), Justina Gyaba, reaffirmed the GES’s commitment to girl-child education, emphasising that empowering young girls benefits society as a whole.
The beneficiaries who were grateful for the donations, expressed optimism in pursuing their dreams with such support.
