Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, is calling upon tertiary institutions to prepare for the influx of students equipped with practical skills due to the introduction of Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focused curricula in senior high schools.
According to the minister, the STEM-focused curriculum is equipping senior high school students with valuable skills, making them more result-oriented and practical hence the need for tertiary institutions to adapt their teaching strategies to nurture these students effectively.
Addressing the GTEC National Tertiary Education Conference in Accra, the Education Minister emphasised the need for tertiary institutions to revamp their teaching methods, adopting a more practical approach to cater to these students.
“Higher education institutions have to prepare themselves to respond to the secondary education transformation going on in our nation and I will tell you this, I know you don’t trust politicians. So, when we say that, you will say look at them, they talk about plans are far advanced. If I tell you that you need to respond to secondary education transformation, I want to show you the evidence, so you walk away from here understanding that something needs to be done at our universities in order to keep up with secondary education transformation.
“When students are building drones and flying drones in our high schools, what is going to happen to them when they come to your aviation and aerospace programme at your university, and they sit in class every single day in level 100 and no practical activity being done? They will be bored to death,” he added.
