Tetteh Quarshie Hospital staff demand speed ramps and footbridge, threaten strike

Health professionals at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital have issued a one-week ultimatum to the government to install speed ramps and a footbridge at the facility’s entrance.

The staff believe these measures are essential to prevent frequent incidents of speeding vehicles hitting patients and staff along the busy Koforidua Mampong-Accra road.

Their call for action follows the tragic death of a registered nurse, struck by a speeding vehicle on Wednesday. In response, the health workers took to the streets on Friday, November 1, to voice their frustration and press for urgent safety improvements.

The staff have warned that they will halt work if their demands are not met within a week. Francis Aboagye, the group’s convener, emphasized the gravity of the issue, explaining how vehicles routinely knock down hospital staff and even patients leaving the facility.

“Our lives are being vandalised, through motors on this stretch, in an attempt to get the road authorities to put up some ramps for us has been futile. We have written letters to them several times. a letter has been sent to the MCE, Regional Minister, and Roads and Highway Authority.

“We started writing letters to them in 2020, this has been four years nothing has been done. This year alone, we have lost 7 people, including four staff, one dead, and two injured badly, how long can we wait? How long do we want to see people dying? We’re saying that enough is enough, to the government.

“If they don’t want us to work, we will lay down our tools. We have done what we’re supposed to do according to the Constitution by following the right channel, but nothing seems to be done. This is a wake-up call to the authorities for them to do what they are expected to do.” Failure to do that we’re giving them one week, we shall lay down our tool, we shall not work.”

Nurses at the labour ward department who lost one of their colleagues expressed their worry about the unfortunate situation and called on the government and highway authorities to come to their aid.
