The United States Embassy in Ghana has intensified efforts to promote the integrity of the upcoming December elections through a series of training programmes for various stakeholders, particularly media practitioners.
Speaking to Citi News, in Tamale, on November 19, Matthew K. Asada, the Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, highlighted the embassy’s holistic approach to supporting Ghana’s democracy.
He emphasised that this year’s focus includes equipping the media to effectively report on the elections and combat misinformation/disinformation, which is critical for ensuring credible outcomes.
“The U.S. Embassy has worked to support the media throughout the last couple of years, but particularly this year,” Asada noted. “We’ve collaborated with Debawa and the Media Foundation for West Africa, all as part of a holistic effort to support Ghanaian democracy and its electoral process.”
During a dialogue on misinformation and disinformation for journalists in Tamale, Asada underscored the importance of media literacy in countering false narratives.
He explained that empowering journalists to understand the impact of misinformation is key to upholding the integrity of the election process.
He also urged Ghanaians to perform their civic duties responsibly while respecting electoral processes.
“It is up to all of us to vote and participate to uphold this democratic system that we have. Whoever you decide to vote for, respect the process and the integrity of those elections,” he said.
Asada expressed optimism about the upcoming polls, saying, “I’m looking forward to free, fair, and credible elections here in Ghana.”
