Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout to be fenced to curb unauthorized activities – Engineer

The Resident Engineer overseeing the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Project, Owusu Sekyere Antwi, has announced plans to erect a protective fence around the roundabout leading to Kaneshie upon the project’s completion.

This measure according to the Resident Engineer, is aimed at curbing unauthorised activities such as hawking and other disruptive behaviours that could undermine the purpose of the newly constructed interchange.

The interchange, which is scheduled for inauguration on Friday, November 29, was constructed to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion that has plagued the stretch for years.

Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, November 28, Mr Antwi said that maintaining order around the interchange is critical to achieving its intended purpose. He highlighted the importance of proactive steps to prevent the type of challenges that have arisen in other areas where similar projects have been undertaken.

Referencing the Flower Pot Interchange, which was inaugurated last week, Mr Antwi noted that authorities have faced significant difficulties in managing hawker activities there. To avoid a repeat of such challenges, the team behind the Obetsebi Lamptey project is taking preemptive action.

In addition to the fencing, the Resident Engineer disclosed that plans are underway to restore the Obetsebi Lamptey statue, which was temporarily removed during construction.

“We are planning to fence the roundabout to prevent hawking around the area. Before the construction of the project, Obetsebi Lamptey’s statue was removed and we will be restoring it once the project is completed so that people who want to visit and read the history of the statue can do so. We will also construct walkways such that vehicles will not be able to climb them.”

The Resident Engineer further urged the travelling public to avoid using the Circle to Kaneshie to escape the heavy traffic situation on the stretch.

“The traffic situation around the construction area is not only today, it has been like that the whole of this week and it is because we are doing works on the roundabout and we have been doing some excavations, and that is why we have to block part of the road from Awudome towards the roundabout. So coming from Awudome, we will advise that you use behind the cemetery towards the TV Africa road.”
