The leadership of the Workers Union of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region has called off its strike and resumed water supply to customers following the intervention of key stakeholders.
This follows assurances by authorities in addressing their concerns over what they described as the unlawful demolition of bungalows belonging to senior company directors by a private developer.
While addressing the press, they confirmed the withdrawal of their industrial action and the resumption of water production and supply after days of service disruption.
“What we want to see is that the action that we took is actually in solidarity with the people of Asanteman. The attack on the bungalows of our managers is a clear show of impunity and if we did not stand by our people whose security and safety were compromised in the process, then what we represent as a water production firm in this region is of no value.
“We want customers to be assured that we do not intend to hurt them, our actions were not meant to inconvenience them, it was a necessary step that has to be taken for the future of this region. We are glad that we have to return to supply by which some of our stations have started already.”
They cautioned that they would resume their demonstration if actions were not taken against those involved in the demolishing.
“We want to give caution that if what happened the last time is not restored, we are monitoring because our directors have given us some promises that they are going to take some swift action and get the matter resolved and retain those properties with Ghana Water company. If we see that further actions have been taken by those involved, we will not hesitate to return to our action again as we demonstrated.”
The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) on December 14, suspended its water supply to some communities in the Ashanti Region following the demolition of staff bungalows by a private developer.
Emmanuel Akpoti Kodiah, Vice Chair of the GWL Workers’ Union, disclosed that the union has withdrawn services in protest against what it describes as the unlawful destruction of bungalows belonging to senior company directors.
The move, he warned, could disrupt water services to consumers in the coming weeks if the issue remains unresolved.
