Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, 2 other Parliamentary declarations illegal, can’t be upheld – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the parliamentary results for Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central constituencies illegal and unable to be upheld.

Samuel Tettey, Deputy EC Chair for Operations, made this announcement during a press briefing in Accra on Friday.

Tettey explained that three of the 12 constituencies requiring re-collation of parliamentary results have been successfully completed: Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North.

However, re-collation is yet to take place in Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, and Techiman South.

“It is important to note that the re-collation in the following constituencies, namely Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central, did not follow laid down processes as enshrined in CI 127 despite police presence at the collation centres to enable the commission staff to undertake the re-collation.

“The centres were again besieged by party supporters who took over the process and forced our staff to declare results of their preferred candidates,” Tettey stated.

He further emphasised that in all four instances, the process of CI 127 was not followed, and EC officers were threatened to declare winners without adhering to the required procedures.

“It is therefore the conclusion of the commission that the collation and declarations which did not follow laid down procedures are illegal and cannot be upheld by the commission since the processes for collation and declaration as set out in CI 127 were violated and not followed,” he added.

Background

Several constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central, experienced violence during the collation of results in the just-ended elections.

Dome Kwabenya

In Dome Kwabenya, Elikplim Akurugu made history by flipping the seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). However, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Mike Oquaye Jr., rejected the results and called for a re-collation. He claimed that mob action disrupted the proper management of the electoral process.

Okaikwei Central

In Okaikwei Central, violence led to the relocation of the collation process to the regional collation center after an attack at the constituency center, during which some ballot papers were destroyed. After 78% of polling stations were collated, the NDC’s Baba Sadiq emerged victorious with 15,383 votes, narrowly defeating incumbent MP Patrick Boamah, who secured 14,949 votes. Patrick Boamah has since announced his intention to challenge the results in court.

Tema Central and Ablekuma North

Similar disturbances occurred during the collation of results in Tema Central and Ablekuma North. In Tema Central, NDC’s Ebi Bright was declared the winner, while in Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC also won under contentious circumstances. Both results have been marred by controversy, with reports of attacks by party supporters at collation centers.

These incidents have raised concerns about electoral security and the integrity of the collation process in the affected constituencies.
