A group of lecturers from the University for Development Studies (UDS) has publicly expressed their support for the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the December 7 elections.
In a joint statement, the lecturers criticised the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the current administration of authoritarianism and a systematic erosion of democratic institutions in Ghana.
The group specifically pointed to the decline of the judiciary, the Electoral Commission, and security agencies, which they claim have been undermined by the NPP’s actions over the past few years.
In contrast, the group lauded John Dramani Mahama and the NDC for their commitment to restoring democracy and good governance.
They emphasised Mahama’s track record, describing him as a leader characterised by humility, empathy, and a deep understanding of the people’s concerns.
“The NPP’s authoritarian tendencies have led to a systematic erosion of our democratic institutions, including the judiciary, the Electoral Commission, and the security agencies. The recent assault on the independence of the Auditor-General’s office is a stark reminder of the NPP’s determination to capture the state and consolidate power at all costs.
“In contrast, we believe that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, offer a beacon of hope for our beloved country. John Mahama has a proven track record of commitment to democracy, good governance, and social justice. His leadership style is characterised by humility, empathy, and a willingness to listen to the concerns of the people.
“We urge all Ghanaians to reject Dr Bawumia and the NPP’s brand of governance, which has brought our country to its knees. We must reject their politics of division, hatred, and corruption. Instead, we must embrace the NDC’s vision of a Ghana that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all.
“As we head to the polls on December 7, we must remember the sacrifices of the eight innocent Ghanaians who lost their lives in the 2020 elections. We must honour their memory by voting for a government that will prioritise their welfare, dignity, and well-being.
“Let us use our votes to bring an end to the NPP’s reign of terror and usher in a new era of hope, unity, and progress under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama and the NDC. Let us show Dr. Bawumia and the NPP that we will no longer tolerate their abuse of power, corruption, and disrespect for human life,” part of the statement read.
