Joshua Alabi, Campaign Manager for the John Mahama Campaign Team, has described the 2024 general election as a democratic uprising against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Alabi emphasized that a large segment of the Ghanaian population expressed their discontent with the government’s inability to address significant challenges faced by the country.
Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Professor Alabi argued that the electorate showed their revolutionary spirit through their voting choices, signalling a rejection of the NPP’s governance.
“When the people decide to remove you, nothing can stop it. And going around the country, it was obvious and that is what I call the people’s democratic revolution. The word democratic and revolution look some way but I have coined it. Normally revolution goes differently, but this time, they are doing a revolution democratically, using the power of the thumb.”
He stated that they were aware of their victory, referencing a certain level of acceptance for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in regions where the party had previously faced rejection.
“Yes, you know there were areas that you go and you never see NDC t-shirts in some years past, but this time, we have NDC t-shirts, people proudly wearing them and asking for more. It’s a pointer to the fact that there’s some degree of acceptability now… You could see that they just wanted to listen to H.E. [John Dramani Mahama].
“A place that we should have been at 6:pm, 2:am we are there and the chiefs and people are waiting in their numbers. When we apologise to them they say no no, we’re happy you have come.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, confirmed Mahama’s victory with 6,328,397 votes cast representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%.
Mahama’s victory also marked a significant achievement for his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won a majority in the Parliament.
Over 180 seats have already been confirmed for the NDC, including key constituencies traditionally held by the ruling NPP. This success strengthens Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to assume the presidency once again.
