‘Fake soldier’ in viral recruitment video arrested

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has arrested Alex Cobbinah, a young man who impersonated a soldier in a viral video, falsely alleging that President-elect John Dramani Mahama planned to dismiss all soldiers recruited through protocol means.

In the video, Cobbinah was seen wearing a Ghana Navy vest and displaying military items while delivering what GAF described as misleading and deceptive messages.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Cobbinah had uploaded multiple videos on social media in which he wore military attire and pretended to be a soldier.

The Military Police apprehended Cobbinah at his residence in Madina Zongo Junction, Accra, and he has been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In a statement, GAF cautioned the public against engaging with intermediaries or agents demanding payment to secure enlistment into the Armed Forces. They urged anyone aware of such activities to report to the nearest military installation or police station, emphasizing that paying such agents makes individuals complicit in fraud.

GAF also reminded the public that unauthorized use of military uniforms or equipment is a violation of the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967. They warned citizens to refrain from such acts to avoid prosecution.
