#GhanaPolls2024: Delayed results from EC behind increasing violence – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concern over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) delay in announcing the results of Saturday’s general elections.

According to the party, the delay in declaring the results is fueling tensions and contributing to pockets of violence in parts of the country.

Addressing the media from the NDC’s headquarters on Sunday, December 8, the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, called on the EC to expedite the announcement of the results to avert further escalation.

His appeal came against the backdrop of growing frustration among NDC supporters, especially the youth, who are demanding clarity and transparency in the electoral process.

In his address, Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as “General Mosquito,” emphasised that both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have completed their independent collation of results.

He questioned why the EC, despite being the official body mandated to oversee and declare the outcomes, had not yet fulfilled its obligation.

Asiedu Nketia stressed that the prolonged delay is creating a dangerous vacuum, leaving room for anxiety, misinformation, and unrest among the populace.

“The two key players [NPP and NDC] have produced our results, yet the EC is dragging its feet to announce the results. We made known in our previous update that the only way to ensure peace was for the EC to announce the results, but we are still waiting and our agents are still waiting across the country, and because of the delay, the youth of this country have started reacting, and that is a dangerous sign.”
