#GhanaPolls2024: Dr. Kabiru wins Walewale

Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, has been declared the Member of Parliament-elect for Walewale after securing a hard-fought victory in the December 7 elections.

Dr. Kabiru garnered 36,700 votes, edging out his contender, Abubakar Abdallah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who polled 31,401 votes.

This win comes against a backdrop of intense intra-party rivalry and legal disputes that shaped the political sphere in the Walewale constituency over the past year.

The road to Dr. Kabiru’s candidacy was anything but smooth. In the lead-up to the NPP primaries, tensions ran high in Walewale as the sitting Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, faced a tough challenge from Dr. Kabiru.

The primary, which saw Dr Kabiru emerge victorious, was fraught with allegations of irregularities, leading to discontent among Hajia Lariba’s supporters.

Refusing to accept the outcome, Hajia Lariba filed a suit at the High Court, Tamale, seeking to overturn the results of the primary. She argued that the process was marred by procedural violations and that her loss did not reflect the will of the party delegates.

However, the High Court dismissed the suit, affirming Dr. Kabiru’s victory in the primary and paving the way for him to represent the NPP in Saturday’s electoral process.

The general election in Walewale was fiercely contested, with the NPP and NDC pulling out all the stops to secure the seat.
