The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Asawase, Manaf Ibrahim, has defended his decision to refrain from jumping the queue at the Akurem Junior High School polling station in the ongoing elections.
Manaf’s stance, which he described as a commitment to equality and adherence to electoral rules, sparked chaos at the polling station, leading to a brief confrontation between his supporters and some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The commotion began when Manaf Ibrahim arrived at the polling station to cast his vote and declined preferential treatment offered to candidates. Instead, he chose to stand in line with voters.
Addressing the media after the incident, Manaf Ibrahim clarified the reasons behind his decision and the subsequent events that led to the chaos.
“I met people in the queue, and they did not give me that privilege. Once that is the rule, I am without exception because the electoral guidelines do not say I can skip the queue,” he explained.
According to Manaf, the situation escalated when he noticed an individual affiliated with the NDC engaging voters while holding a copy of the voter register.
“What happened was that there was an NDC guy in the queue with the voter register, talking to people, but I did not mind him. However, he told the security officer on duty to tell me to skip the queue and vote and go.”
“And I raised the concern that if he is not an agent, he should not be in the queue talking to voters, and so they should take him off here, or I will. That is what created the chaos. I have always voted here, and this is the fourth time voting at this polling station, and I have never skipped the queue. That is what I have just done.”
