The National Peace Council (NPC), has strongly condemned a shooting incident that occurred in Nyankpala in the Northern Region, during the December 7 elections.
The council made the condemnation in collaboration with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other partners in the Election Situation Room.
The incident resulted in the tragic death of one person and left another injured.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest of four individuals in connection with the shooting earlier this afternoon.
In a statement, the NPC expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims and the affected community and strongly denounced any form of electoral violence.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the killing and injury of any person during the elections. This violence is unacceptable, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected, as well as to the local community in Nyankpala and other regions impacted by similar acts of violence,” the NPC said.
The NPC reiterated its firm stance against the use of firearms in the electoral process, calling on all stakeholders in the election to uphold peace and stability throughout the voting period.
The Council also reminded the public of the commitment made by all political parties during the signing of the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact on November 28, 2024, where party leaders pledged to promote a peaceful and stable environment before, during, and after the elections.
The NPC urged all political parties and their supporters to honor these pledges in the interest of Ghana’s democracy.
