#GhanaPolls2024: Sammi Awuku wins Akuapim North seat

Sammi Awuku, the Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akuapim North, has emerged victorious. Awuku secured a commanding 28,365 votes, defeating his closest contender, John Evans Kumordzi of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 14,217 votes.

Awuku’s victory makes him one of the relatively few NPP parliamentary aspirants who have won their seats following a challenging election season for the governing party.

A former National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Awuku has a long history of political involvement. While at the University of Ghana, he was an active participant in student politics, contesting for the presidency of the Student Representative Council.

He later served at the NPP’s Communications Directorate under Nana Akomea before his election as the party’s National Youth Organiser in 2014.

NDC Flips Ayawaso Central

Meanwhile, in Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey, the incumbent NPP MP and a key figure in the party, lost his seat to Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC. Tubazu secured 29,755 votes against Quartey’s 23,345, marking a significant win for the opposition party.

The NDC’s dominance in the constituency also saw Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) trail far behind with just 163 votes. Out of 53,550 total votes cast, 287 ballots were rejected as invalid.

NDC’s Parliamentary Gains

The NDC’s victory in Ayawaso Central adds to its growing list of parliamentary successes, including flipping previously NPP-held seats in Mpohor and Sekondi. These gains reflect a broader trend of significant shifts in parliamentary representation in the 2024 elections.

While Sammi Awuku’s win in Akuapim North underscores his popularity and effective campaigning, the NDC’s overall performance demonstrates its ability to capitalize on key constituencies, potentially reshaping the dynamics of Ghana’s next Parliament.
