Gyakye Quayson maintains Assin North seat with landslide victory

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has retained his seat in the just-concluded 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Quayson, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 18,023 votes, amounting to 56.35% of the total valid votes cast.

His main contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 13,599 votes, representing 42.52%.

Quayson’s political journey has been marked by controversy. He was found to have violated Article 94(2)(a) of Ghana’s Constitution during the 2020 parliamentary elections due to holding dual citizenship with Canada.

This provision disqualifies anyone who owes allegiance to another country from serving as a Member of Parliament.

The Supreme Court subsequently annulled the 2020 parliamentary election results in the Assin North constituency. However, Quayson reclaimed his position in a by-election held on June 27, 2023, and was sworn in on July 4, 2023.

This victory reaffirms Quayson’s stronghold in the constituency despite legal challenges and opposition from the NPP.
