Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has urged Ghanaians to unite behind the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government following a peaceful conclusion to the 2024 elections.
The NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, secured victory over the New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking Mahama’s return to power after eight years in opposition.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Gyan congratulated the new administration and emphasized the importance of collective support over partisan politics.
“Let’s support the government. Any government that comes to power, let’s support them. When you go and buy things at GHC 50 and you sell them at GHC 1000, the country will go through hardship,” he remarked.
“Ghana has decided. Let’s put party politics aside, and if your party has won, focus on government, and for us as citizens, we will also support.”
Gyan highlighted the need for a shift in mindset to ensure the country’s progress under the new administration. “We also have to change our attitudes, and we have to support the new government. Let’s congratulate the new government, and that is my message,” he stated.
“So as a good citizen or as a loyal citizen of this country, this is my message for you: Let’s congratulate the ruling party, which is the NDC, and let us support them, not sabotage them,” he added.

Before the elections, Gyan had briefly engaged in politics, serving as chairman of the Youth and Sports sub-committee on the NPP’s 2024 manifesto team. He even expressed interest in running as a vice-presidential candidate alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, in September 2024, Gyan publicly announced his withdrawal from partisan politics, citing a desire to focus on philanthropy and youth empowerment.
“My primary focus is now on humanitarian work and uplifting the youth of Ghana,” he explained in a public statement.
Despite stepping back from politics, Gyan remains a beloved figure in Ghana. As the nation’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances, his influence extends far beyond football, making his call for unity a rallying cry for citizens to come together and support the incoming government.
