Mahama won’t know peace until he signs anti-gay bill – Sam George

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has insisted that former President John Dramani Mahama will face “no peace” until he enacts the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law if he regains the presidency.

This statement follows Mahama’s recent comments in a BBC interview, where he indicated he would review the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-gay Bill, before making a final decision on its enactment.

Addressing journalists in Accra, Sam George, a key advocate of the bill, reiterated Mahama’s previous commitment to support the legislation, stressing the public expectation for him to honour this pledge.

“Mahama has been clear that he is going to sign that bill and he has no option but to sign that bill. President Mahama will know no peace until he signs that bill. And he has said to the clergy that as a Christian and as a member of the Assemblies of God, he wasn’t against the bill. What the former president said to the BBC was in response to why President Akufo-Addo has not signed the bill,” he stated.

The bill, which has sparked controversy, aims to safeguard traditional family values, though opponents argue it violates human rights.

Passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, the bill’s future remains uncertain as President Akufo-Addo awaits the outcome of two Supreme Court cases challenging its constitutionality.

A Supreme Court ruling on July 17 delayed judgments on these cases until all related legal issues are resolved.
