Special Aide to President-Elect John Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has disclosed that efforts are ongoing to review the composition of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team to include women following a push by the Affirmative Action Law Coalition.
The five-member ORAL team announced on Wednesday, December 18 was without a woman, necessitating calls by women rights groups for an adherence to the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024, Act 1121 which among other targets hopes for a 30% women representation in political, social, economic and cultural spheres.
According to Joyce Bawa Mogtari, the attention of the President-elect has been drawn to the exclusion of women and efforts are being made to rectify it.
“We have just reminded the President-Elect about the fact that we are waiting patiently for the female nominees to serve on the ORAL preparatory team as part of his anti-corruption agenda,” she noted.
The Special Aide to John Mahama however called for more focus on the elevation of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as an incoming Vice President, signaling the first in Ghana’s history.
“I think that before everybody starts to raise these issues, let’s celebrate the fact that there is a female vice president in waiting, the rest which is a promise we made that at least 30 percent of the appointments will be reserved for women, that is also a work in progress.”
Meanwhile, the Affirmative Action Law Coalition has welcomed this move describing it as a good step to address the anomalies in the various appointments made so far.
