The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has instructed the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to immediately restore water supply to affected communities in the Greater Kumasi area.
This directive follows a recent decision by GWCL to cut water supply to several areas, including Bantama, Atonsu, Santasi, and Ridge.
In a statement, the PURC described the disruption as a violation of citizens’ fundamental right to access clean and safe water, emphasising that water is an essential service that must not be arbitrarily withheld.
Citing Regulations 2 and 3(d) & (e) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Consumer Service) Regulations 2020 (LI 2413), the PURC directed GWCL to submit a detailed report explaining the reasons for the interruption and outlining measures to prevent future occurrences.
Additionally, the commission urged GWCL to engage with the affected communities and provide alternative water supplies where necessary.
The PURC also assured residents that it would closely monitor the situation to safeguard the interests of consumers.
“GWCL shall submit a detailed report on the reasons for the service interruption and measures being taken to prevent such occurrences in the future. The commission has also directed GWL to engage with the affected communities and to provide alternative supplies as needed.
“The commission will monitor the situation and take further action if necessary to protect the interest of consumers,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the Workers Union of Ghana Water Limited in the Ashanti Region has called off its strike and resumed water supply to customers following the intervention of key stakeholders.
Management stated that they have received assurances addressing their concerns over what they described as the unlawful demolition of bungalows belonging to senior company directors by a private developer.
