Savelugu NDC rejects NPP PC’s victory

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Savelugu constituency has strongly rejected the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate (PC), Hajia Fatihiya Abdul-Aziz.

The NDC has raised allegations of over-voting, vote-buying, and intimidation through gun threats during the election.

In a press briefing held in Savelugu, on December 18, the NDC constituency Communications Officer, Nyaba Abass, outlined several concerns surrounding the parliamentary election results in the constituency.

According to Mr. Abass, the election was marred by widespread irregularities that compromised its fairness and credibility.

He alleged that some voters were allowed to cast their ballots without undergoing the mandatory verification process, while others were issued double ballots to vote.

These actions, he claimed, inflated the votes in favour of the NPP candidate.

“People voted without any form of verification, and in some cases, individuals were handed double ballots to cast their votes. These acts undermined the credibility of the election,” Mr. Abass stated.

The NDC further accused the NPP of engaging in vote-buying to influence the outcome of the election.

According to Mr. Abass, bags of rice were transported into the constituency and distributed to voters as an inducement to sway their votes.

Adding to the allegations, the NDC in Savelugu claimed that their polling agents were subjected to intimidation and threats of violence.

Mr. Abass revealed that some agents were reportedly threatened with guns, forcing them to comply with actions that favoured the NPP candidate.

“Our polling agents were threatened at gunpoint, leaving them with no choice but to succumb to the pressure at the polling stations,” he said.

The NDC has declared the NPP PC’s victory as null and void, insisting that the election results do not reflect the will of the people of Savelugu.

The party has called on the Electoral Commission to investigate the alleged irregularities and ensure that justice is served.

The controversy has heightened tensions in the Savelugu constituency, with both parties holding firm to their positions. As the dispute unfolds, the NDC has hinted at pursuing legal action to challenge the outcome of the election.
